IC3600LRDC1A Gas Turbine Relay Driver Board: what it does
The IC3600LRDC1A is a relay driver board from the IC3600LRD group of the GE Speedtronic Mark I / Mark II turbine control system — GE's earliest Speedtronic generation. Its role is to take low-level control commands from the turbine control logic and convert them into the switched outputs that drive physical relays. Those relays in turn operate the machine: fuel and control valves, solenoids, ignition and motor contactors, alarms and permissive circuits. In short, the LRD board is the muscle between the control logic and the electromechanical devices out on the turbine.
It is a discrete, through-hole board built for switching duty. The IC3600LRDC is populated with numerous transistor driver stages — on this card, on the order of thirty-two transistors arranged in groups, together with the resistors, diodes and electrolytic capacitors that shape and protect each channel. That many-channel construction matters for troubleshooting, because a fault can be confined to a single output while the rest of the board stays healthy.
Is it the driver board or the relay? Diagnose first
The relay driver is one of the easiest cards to replace unnecessarily, because a relay that fails to operate looks the same from the control room whether the board, the relay or the wiring is at fault. Localize before you buy:
-
Confirm the command is arriving. Check that the logic-level command for the affected channel actually reaches the board input. If the command is not there, the problem is upstream in the control logic, not on the driver.
-
Watch one channel versus all channels. A single dead output usually means one driver transistor, or the relay and wiring on that channel. If every channel is dead, suspect board power, the common return or the edge connector instead.
-
Test the relay and its load. An open or shorted relay coil, welded contacts or damaged field wiring will mimic a failed driver. Measure the coil and check the wiring before condemning the card.
-
Reseat and clean the edge connector. Oxidized edge fingers and a loose rack seat are a classic cause of intermittent relay operation on IC3600 boards. Clean the edge and the rack connector and reseat before deciding.
Because a single failed transistor affects only one channel, many LRD faults are both repairable and easy to localize — another reason to diagnose the specific channel before swapping the whole board.
Understanding the IC3600LRDC1A part number
IC3600 is the Mark I / Mark II Speedtronic card series, LRD is the relay-driver group, and the letter C identifies this particular driver variant (distinct from the D, H and J relay drivers in the same group). The trailing 1A is the revision or dash detail, which should be matched with the base number because different revisions can differ in channel count, jumpering or component values. Our GE Speedtronic Part Number Decoder walks through the scheme.
Related Mark I-II relay-driver and interface cards
The LRDC shares its group with the LRDD, LRDH and LRDJ relay drivers, and it works next to the interface and selector cards of the IC3600SIX group — the SIXM interface card being a common neighbor. Keeping a matching relay and a known-good companion board on hand makes channel-level faults far quicker to pin down. You can browse the group in our GE Mark I-II IC3600 Cards collection and the wider range in GE Speedtronic Turbine Control Boards. Note that later Speedtronic generations use entirely different output and relay modules, so an IC3600 relay driver is not interchangeable with Mark IV, V or VI hardware; and as a pre-TMR generation, Mark I-II drivers are single-channel, not voted R/S/T outputs.
What to include when requesting a quote
