Installing an IS220PDOAH1B: What the Mounting Actually Involves
This IS220PDOAH1B (referenced with a further BE suffix on GE's documentation) is new surplus stock without its original box. Physically installing a PDOA pack is simpler than a lot of buyers expect: the pack plugs directly onto its discrete output terminal board, and threaded studs next to the Ethernet ports slide into a mounting bracket sized for that terminal board type. GE's own guidance is to position the bracket so no right-angle force is ever applied to the DC-37 connector between pack and board — normally a one-time adjustment for the life of the installation, not something you touch on every pack swap.
Functionally, PDOA is the discrete output pack in the Mark VIe distributed I/O system: it takes commands from the <R>, <S>, or <T> controller over IONet (dual RJ-45 ports) and drives up to 12 relay outputs, reading feedback back through the same DC-37 connector. The terminal board sets the relay technology — electromagnetic on TRLYH1B, C, D, F boards, solid-state on TRLYH1E boards. For simplex applications, one pack plugs into the terminal board; for TMR, three packs plug into three separate connectors on a TMR-capable board, one per core.
Before You Swap Hardware, Diagnose First
- Most output problems trace back to the terminal board side — relay contacts, fuses, and field wiring — rather than the pack, which only carries the command and monitoring electronics.
- Use the swap test: move the suspect pack to a known-good terminal board, or install a known-good pack on the suspect board, and see which one the fault follows.
- All outputs are held disabled for a brief period during the pack's power-up self-test — that's expected, not a defect.
- Confirm relay type (electromagnetic vs. solid-state) before assuming a pack replacement is the fix for an output that won't behave as expected.
- Check IONet cabling and switch health first; a network fault and a pack fault look the same from the control room.
Reading the Part Number
IS220 marks a Mark VIe distributed I/O pack, PDOA the discrete output function, H1 the design generation, and B (plus any further trailing letter on your label) a hardware revision. Match the complete string to your terminal board and ControlST project. Our GE Speedtronic Part Number Decoder explains the rest of the convention.
Related Packs
PDOA pairs with TRLY-family relay terminal boards. Where input and output are combined on one terminal board, the related PDIO pack does both from a single assembly. See our GE Mark VI IS200 Boards collection for compatible terminal boards.
