NetApp is unusually strict about drive firmware: a standard Seagate or Toshiba drive will not be adopted by ONTAP without the correct NetApp firmware and sector formatting (typically 520-byte). Every drive we quote for a NetApp array carries the correct NetApp part number and firmware — this is the single most common reason a cheap drive purchase fails on a NetApp system.
What to include in your RFQ: the NetApp part number (X-number, for example X423A-R6) or the controller and shelf model, the ONTAP version you're running, quantity, and preferred condition. If you're expanding a shelf, tell us the existing drive type and capacity — mixing drive types within an aggregate has real performance consequences.
