Woodward has been building prime-mover controls for over a century, and a running plant often has three or four generations of Woodward equipment on the same skid. When a governor, synchronizer, or protection module fails, the first job is not sourcing — it is identification. Name the family correctly and the right spare is straightforward; guess wrong and you lose weeks. This guide walks through the Woodward turbine and generator-control families we stock, what each one does, how to tell them apart, and exactly what to put on a request for quote.

First, how to read a Woodward part number

Almost every Woodward control carries an eight-digit part number in the form XXXX-XXX or XXXX-XXXX — for example 9907-163. Unlike some manufacturers, the four-digit prefix does not map cleanly to a single product family: you will find the 9907 prefix on a 505 steam-turbine governor, a 2301A speed control, and a 723Plus load-sharing control alike. So do not try to decode the family from the prefix.

What actually identifies the unit is two things: the model name printed on the faceplate or nameplate (505E, 2301A, DSLC, ProTech, MicroNet, easYgen), and the full part number including the dash suffix. On Woodward hardware the dash number is decisive — it encodes the specific configuration, voltage, and revision, and two units with the same family name but different dash numbers are frequently not interchangeable. Always read and send the complete number.

2301A Analog load-sharing and speed control for diesel/gas engines and generator sets. Isochronous or droop. Single sheet-metal chassis, front potentiometers, internal DIP switches; no serial port. Examples: 9907-014, 9905-068.
2301D Microprocessor successor to the 2301A. Adds a base-load mode and is configured over an RS-232 port using Woodward Watch Window; functionally compatible with 2301A systems. Digital display/serial port; "2301D" nameplate. Sourced on request.
723Plus Digital speed / load-sharing control, a flexible programmable platform for engines and turbines. "723Plus" nameplate. Examples: 8280-1009, 9907-169.
DSLC-2 / MSLC-2 Digital Synchronizer and Load Control (DSLC) handles auto-sync, load sensing, load control, dead-bus closing, VAR/PF and process control for one genset. Master Synchronizer and Load Control (MSLC) coordinates a plant of DSLC units against the utility tie — up to 32 gensets over Ethernet. "DSLC" / "MSLC" nameplate. Example DSLC we stock: 9905-373.
SPM-A / SPM-D Speed & Phase Matching synchronizers — automatic synchronizing that issues raise/lower to speed and voltage. SPM-A is analog; SPM-D is the digital series. "SPM-A" / "SPM-D" nameplate. SPM-A examples: 9907-029, 9905-003, 9905-001. SPM-D11/LSXR: 8440-1715.
easYgen (1000 / 2000 / 3000) Genset controllers spanning stand-alone metering through full multi-unit paralleling and power management. "easYgen-1500/2500/3200" on the display bezel. Examples: 8440-1750, 8440-1860, 8440-2050, 8440-2082.
ProTech Overspeed / overacceleration protection that trips the turbine. The current ProTech-GII uses triple-modular-redundant (TMR) hardware with 2-out-of-3 voting, online module (A/B/C) replacement, and IEC 61508 SIL-3 certification (meets API 670 and API 612). ProTech-SX is the simplex version; ProTech TPS extends to a full protection system. "ProTech" nameplate; three identical A/B/C modules on the GII. Legacy ProTech 203 example we stock: 8200-203.
MFR 300 Multifunction generator protection relay — consolidates generator protection functions in one DIN-rail device with Modbus RTU, CANopen, and Ethernet. "MFR 300" nameplate; DIN-rail protection relay. Sourced on request.
MicroNet / MicroNet Plus Rack-based modular control platform for large turbines, available in simplex and TMR builds; CPU, I/O, and networking modules plug into a common chassis. 19-inch rack of Woodward modules. Examples we stock: 5466-1047 (TMR), 5466-409 (CPU), 5501-465 (power supply).

Actuators (for example the EG-A and EGB families) and load-sharing accessories such as AGLC and the 828 module round out most Woodward installations, and we carry those as well.

How to identify the unit in front of you

Read the identification off the hardware, in this order:

  1. Faceplate model name — 505E, 2301A, DSLC, ProTech, easYgen. This places the family in seconds.
  2. The full Woodward part number — on the nameplate or a side/rear label, in XXXX-XXX(X) form. Record every digit including the dash suffix.
  3. Physical form — a single sheet-metal box with front pots is almost certainly an analog 2301A or SPM-A; a rack of plug-in modules is a MicroNet; three identical stacked modules are a ProTech-GII TMR set.
  4. Revision / software version — if a label or display shows an application or software revision, note it. On digital units it affects configuration compatibility.

If a label is missing or illegible, photograph the faceplate and the full unit and send the pictures. Layout and connector arrangement usually let us identify the family even without a clean number.

What to send when you request a quote

  • The complete part number, dash suffix included (9907-1183, not "505E").
  • The model name and application — steam turbine, gas engine genset, plant synchronizing, or overspeed protection.
  • Simplex or redundant — for ProTech and MicroNet, whether the system is simplex or TMR, and which module position you need.
  • Condition you will accept — new, new surplus, or tested used. Many of these controls are long out of production, and new-in-box may simply not exist.
  • Quantity and spares — a single replacement and a full redundant set price very differently.
